According to Kenya News Agency, the celebration was attended by Paul Lodung'a, the County Chief Officer for Early Childhood Development and Social Protection, who stressed the importance of empowering children with skills beyond traditional literacy, including digital literacy. He announced plans to mobilize resources for books and digitize library systems as part of investing in Turkana's future. Lodung'a also revealed plans to construct a modern library facility in Lodwar, urging partners to maintain their support and acknowledging the President's backing of the Turkana University charter to enhance higher education in the region.
Hellen Mbotela, Librarian at the Turkana County Public Library, expressed gratitude to teachers and stakeholders for supporting continuous learning. She noted the library's transition to digitization, requiring membership for access to digital resources and highlighted their monthly book loan program to schools and communities.
Dr. Miriti Geruaso of Turkana University College identified the region's 82 percent illiteracy rate as a pressing issue. He emphasized the importance of community outreach to provide access to reading materials and digital tools, with a commitment to closing the literacy gap alongside partners.
In a show of support, Turkana-based author Flavian Nyambura donated six of her books to inspire young readers, and Rev. Iruko Jackson, Dean of students at Turkana University College, pledged the institution's ongoing support for educational initiatives. The event was supported by partners including the Kenya Red Cross, Turkana University College, Equity Bank, and Turkwood Brands, with participation from Bishop Mahon, Erait Academy, and Loyoo schools.
