Tunisian National Guard Detains 16 Attempting Mediterranean Crossing to Europe

Djerba Island – The Tunisian National Guard has detained 16 nationals, including children, as they attempted to make an illegal sea crossing from Tunisia to Europe.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the group was apprehended off the coast of Djerba Island in southeastern Tunisia. The National Guard's statement, released on their official Facebook page, did not specify the exact time of the arrests but noted that a sum of foreign currency was also seized during the operation. The individuals detained have been referred to the relevant authorities to undergo necessary legal proceedings.

Tunisia's geographical position in the central Mediterranean has long made it a significant transit point for migrants attempting to reach Europe illegally. This incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by both Tunisian and European authorities in managing migration flows across the Mediterranean.
