Trump’s Threat to Revoke Rosie O’Donnell’s Citizenship Sparks Legal Debate

New York: Former President Donald Trump has stirred controversy by suggesting on his Truth Social platform that he is considering revoking comedian Rosie O'Donnell's U.S. citizenship. Trump cited O'Donnell as a "Threat to Humanity" and suggested she should remain in Ireland. This statement has raised questions about the legality of such an action.

According to Deutsche Welle, legal experts quickly pointed out that the threat is unconstitutional, referencing the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees citizenship to all persons born or naturalized in the United States. The amendment has been a cornerstone of U.S. citizenship law since its ratification in 1868.

Trump's remarks echo previous threats he has made regarding stripping citizenship from naturalized citizens, including figures such as Elon Musk and Zohran Mamdani. However, a 1967 Supreme Court ruling established that the U.S. government cannot typically revoke citizenship without the individual's consent unless fraud is involved in the naturalization process.

Cassandra Burke Robertson, a professor at Case Western Reserve University's law school, highlighted that denaturalization cases, once rare, have seen an increase due to advancements in digital tracking of potential fraud. Robertson noted that while these efforts began during the Obama administration, the Trump administration took a more aggressive approach towards denaturalization.

The ongoing feud between Trump and O'Donnell stretches back nearly two decades. O'Donnell first criticized Trump in 2006, and their public exchanges have only intensified over the years. Since moving to Ireland in early 2025 following Trump's reelection, O'Donnell has continued her criticism of his policies from abroad.

O'Donnell's recent comments on TikTok criticizing Trump's response to the Texas floods may have prompted his latest statement. In response to Trump's threat, O'Donnell posted on Instagram, mocking Trump and listing reasons why she believes she is perceived as a threat to him.

The legal debate surrounding Trump's suggestion to revoke O'Donnell's citizenship underscores the complexities and constitutional protections associated with U.S. citizenship. As this situation unfolds, it highlights the ongoing tensions and political discourse involving prominent figures in the public eye.
