Truck Driver Detained for Mandrax Trafficking at Ariamsvlei Border


ARIAMSVLEI — A 51-year-old truck driver was apprehended for the alleged possession of Mandrax tablets valued at over N$700,000, as he attempted to enter Namibia from South Africa. The arrest occurred at the Ariamsvlei border post, marking a significant drug seizure by local authorities.



According to Namibia Press Agency, the Namibian Police Force’s crime investigations coordinator for the ||Kharas Region, the suspect was detained early Sunday morning. During a routine inspection of the vehicle, officers discovered six transparent plastic bags containing suspected Mandrax tablets concealed within the truck.



The findings detailed by Mbango included 6,186 full Mandrax tablets and 49 half tablets, with the total value estimated at approximately N$745,260. The man, whose identity has not been disclosed, is slated to appear before the Karasburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, facing charges related to dealing in prohibited substances that induce dependence.



The incident underscores the ongoing efforts of Namibian authorities to curb the illegal drug trade across its borders. Police investigations into the matter are ongoing, reflecting the seriousness with which the Namibian Police Force is addressing drug trafficking and its implications for regional security and public health.
