Rundu: Kavango East Region Governor, Hamunyera Hambyuka, has stated that the trees planted in honor of Sam Nujoma will serve as a symbol of his values and the positive change he championed in Namibia. Hambyuka made this declaration during the Kavango East Region’s tree planting ceremony, held to pay homage to the legacy of the late Founding President and Founding Father of the Namibian nation.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the region’s tree planting ceremony took place at Dr. Herbert Diaz Secondary School in Rundu. This initiative is part of a nationwide tree planting effort, following a proposal by the Sam Nujoma Foundation to declare May 12, Nujoma’s birthday, as a national tree planting day to honor his legacy as an environmentalist and advocate for sustainable development.
“As the tree grows, it will remind us of the strength and resilience he instilled in us, encouraging future generations to uphold these same principles. Let this planting not only commemorate a life well-lived but also inspire us to continue Nujoma’s mission, which is fostering growth, unity, and progress within our communities and Namibia as a whole,” Hambyuka said.
He further emphasized that planting these trees serves as a living tribute to Nujoma’s enduring legacy, which remains an inspiration and a guide to all Namibians. “Just as a tree grows and provides shelter, nourishment, and beauty, so did Nujoma nurture our communities and Namibia with wisdom, compassion, and unwavering commitment to justice, education and environmental conservation,” Hambyuka added.
In collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism, the governor donated 179 trees, which will be distributed among five schools in the Kavango East Region. Hambyuka pointed out that the trees will not only enhance the beauty of the schools and community but also serve as a living testament to the positive change they can achieve when they come together for a common cause.
