Nyamira: Three children tragically lost their lives early this morning in a devastating house fire in Rigena location, Nyamira County, while they were asleep. According to Kenya News Agency, Masaba North Deputy County Commissioner Stella Wanyela confirmed that the three minors, aged between 4 and 12 years, were asleep in the upper section of their one-story house when the fire broke out. The upper section, made primarily of wood and iron sheets, was engulfed in flames, while the lower section, where the parents were sleeping, is a permanent structure and did not catch fire. "I received the first distress call from Babu, the bodaboda chairman in this sub-county, and immediately after, Rigena location chief, Charles Okero, also called me to inform me about the fire incident in his area of jurisdiction at around 1 am," DCC Wanyela stated. She described the incident as shocking and profound, with a lasting impact on the affected family. Police and DCI officers are currently investigating to ascertain the mai n cause of the fire. Efforts made by residents to extinguish the fire were unfortunately belated, and the children's bodies were burnt beyond recognition. Wanyela urged the community to remain calm as investigations continue and conveyed her condolences to the father of the deceased children, who was injured while attempting to save his children from the blaze. Local leaders, including Kitutu Masaba MP Clive Gisairo and Gachuba Member of the County Assembly Henry Obwaya, have expressed their condolences and urged the community to provide psychosocial support to the bereaved family. The remains of the children have been taken to Gucha Hospital mortuary for autopsy and funeral arrangements.
