Tjongarero Calls for Greater Inclusion in Southern African Sports

WINDHOEK: Minister of Sport, Youth and National Service, Agnes Tjongarero, has called on the Southern African region to prioritize inclusion in sports for persons with disabilities, emphasizing the role of sports in fostering a more inclusive and tolerant society.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Tjongarero addressed the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Council of Ministers meeting in Windhoek, urging for bold initiatives to ensure sports serve as a platform for societal inclusion. She proposed the formation of a regional coalition dedicated to promoting equity and inclusion in sports, underscoring the necessity for all physical education, sports, and recreation programs to accommodate marginalized groups effectively.

The meeting, conducted under the theme “a progressive, inclusive and performing region,” is scheduled to conclude on Friday. Tjongarero’s call to action highlights the importance of regional collaboration to enhance the participation of persons with disabilities in sports, aiming
to create a more inclusive sporting environment across Southern Africa.
