Ouagadougou: The Minister of State, Minister of Territorial Administration and Mobility, Mr. Emile Zerbo, representing the Prime Minister, Head of Government, HE Mr. Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouedraogo, presided over the official ceremony for the presentation of the Thomas Sankara Memorial project in the Banquet Hall of Ouaga 2000. The event saw the attendance of the Minister of Communication, Culture, Arts and Tourism, Mr. Pingdwend© Gilbert Ouedraogo, and the Minister of Infrastructure and Opening up, Mr. Adama Luc Sorgho.
According to Burkina Information Agency, Mr. Emile Zerbo reaffirmed the commitment of the President of Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traore, to honor the memory of President Thomas Sankara. He highlighted that the Memorial project is a significant priority for the Head of State and the government. Mr. Zerbo underscored the historical and symbolic importance of the initiative, emphasizing that President Sankara's legacy transcends national boundaries, continuing to inspire sovereignty, integrity, social justice, and self-determination globally.
The Minister of State called upon Burkinabe citizens and international partners to embrace the project, urging them to serve as its ambassadors. A national and international campaign will soon be launched to garner support for the Memorial's realization.
Mr. Pingdwend© Gilbert Ouedraogo, the Minister of Communication, Culture, Arts and Tourism, described the Memorial as a place for life, memory, and transmission, intended to foster intercultural dialogue and honor President Sankara's intellectual, political, and cultural legacy.
The project, designed by renowned Burkinabe architect Francis Kere, will cover 14 hectares and feature an 87-meter-high Sankara Tower, a multipurpose hall seating 1,100, along with educational, cultural, and memorial facilities. The cost is estimated at 177.5 billion CFA francs, with 60% financed by the Burkinabe government and 40% anticipated from partners.
During the ceremony, ten individuals were honored for their efforts in preserving President Sankara's memory, receiving honorary titles of Officer and Knight of the Order of the Stallion.
