Thembiso Magajana Spearheads Digital Literacy in South Africa’s Rural Areas

Johannesburg, South Africa – Thembiso Magajana, a visionary from a small rural community in South Africa, is making significant strides in bridging the technology gap in the country. In 2017, she founded Social Coding, a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing digital literacy in rural areas, particularly among unemployed youth.

Magajana, who initially pursued a career in finance for financial stability, always harbored a passion for technology. She turned her attention to computers and robotics, recognizing the need for digital skills in rural communities. Social Coding recruits, trains, and employs unemployed young people to deliver digital literacy programs in local high schools.

According to Africa News Agency, Social Coding’s comprehensive training programs include coding workshops, robotics training, and virtual reality experiences. These initiatives aim to empower students to embrace technology and bridge the digital divide. Since its inception, the organization has impacted over 6,000 people across South Africa.

Magajana defines a social entrepreneur as someone committed to creating positive social change through innovative and sustainable solutions. Her approach balances societal impact with profitability, focusing on empowering communities to participate actively in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Currently, Social Coding operates with a team of fifteen and has extended its reach to four provinces in South Africa. The organization has also expanded to Zambia in collaboration with Absa Bank, aiming to reach the continent’s most remote and marginalized communities.

Magajana’s ambition doesn’t stop at South Africa’s borders. She envisions Social Coding expanding further, leveraging coding, robotics, and virtual reality to empower individuals in the digital era.
