Pouni: The rural commune of Pouni vibrated to the rhythm of drums and flutes on Saturday, May 9, marking the launch of the 18th edition of the Festival of Masks in all its splendor. Under a blazing sun but amid popular fervor, nearly 22 mask societies stormed the arena, offering a spectacle where spirituality meets aesthetics. According to Burkina Information Agency, the opening ceremony was presided over by the High Commissioner of Sanguié Province, Talari Germaine Ouoba, who emphasized the sacred dimension of this event. Conveying the message of the national authorities, she reminded everyone that masks are not merely objects of art. "Masks symbolize wisdom, social cohesion, respect for customs, and the link between the sacred and the generations. Through their dance and their message, they remind everyone of the importance of preserving our heritage while building a future of peace and progress," she declared. The Friends of the Mask Association (AMA), the driving force behind the event, considers this f estival as the cement of a pluralistic nation. Ya Hervé Gué, president of the AMA, emphasized the political and social significance of this gathering. For him, the diversity of the fiber masks - representing wild and domestic animals - reflects a collective strength. "This festival is more than a cultural event. It is a space for dialogue and a project for national unity. Peace must be sought daily through our values and our collective commitment." Born in 1990 as a carnival before officially becoming a festival in 1995, the Pouni event is celebrating its 36th anniversary. It has managed to withstand the test of time and adapt to the socio-political contexts of Burkina Faso to remain a bulwark against oblivion. For three days, the sound of flutes and drums will continue to guide the steps of the masks. Beyond the festivities, the program includes intergenerational exchanges and educational activities, reaffirming the festival's mission: to pass on to younger generations the torch of a strong cultural identi ty, a guarantee of sustainable living together.
