Tech Industry Concerned by Low Female Enrollment in ICT Courses at Zetech University

NAIROBI – Industry leaders are expressing concern over the low number of female students enrolling in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) courses at universities and colleges, noting the significant impact on their marketability in the job market.

According to Zetech University’s Director of Research and Innovation Esther Wanjiru, while technology jobs are becoming increasingly interconnected across all sectors, there is a marked disparity in enrollment figures for these programs. Wanjiru revealed that of the 50 students undertaking IT-related courses at Zetech University, a mere five percent are female. She emphasized the importance of staying current with technological advancements and the extensive opportunities available in the digital workspace, which are currently exceeding the number of skilled digital workers. The remarks were made during a workshop named ‘Women in Tech competition’ at the University, aiming to encourage female students from various higher learning institutions to pursue ICT courses for better job prospects.

In an effort to enhance their students’ competitiveness, Zetech University has initiated a linkage program with tech giants including Microsoft, Huawei, Google, and Africa Stocking, among others. These partnerships offer internships and other opportunities, with some students securing permanent positions with these firms.

Eve Kilel from SheHacks, a cybersecurity firm, reiterated the need to encourage more women to enter the tech field, citing it as a form of empowerment. Similarly, Velma Wafula, a Zetech alumna now working with USIU-Africa, advised students to network with established tech companies and professionals to improve their job prospects.

Further highlighting the university’s initiatives, Wanjiru mentioned the participation of Zetech students in the Ajira Programme, launched by the Ministry of ICT in 2016. The program provides training in various digital skills, including transcription, digital marketing, and virtual assistance, equipping students to earn an income through online work while they continue their studies.
