Police seize firearms prior to weekend operation

In the wake of weekend operations to be rolled out to safeguard Western Cape communities, members acted on information and continue to rid our streets and communities from the scourge of illegal firearms and ammunition.

On 07 June 2023 at about 12:35 information was received of a firearm being stored at a premises in Mountain Drive, Hawston. Hermanus SAPS, in collaboration with Law Enforcement officials conducted an operation and performed a search at the premise. The search resulted in the discovery of a 6.35 Astra pistol and two rounds of ammunition which were found hidden in a car on the premises. The members also found and seized five cellphones, suspected to be stolen property. The firearm will be send for ballistic tests to determine whether it could have been involved in the commission of crime.

The members arrested two suspects aged 34 and 45 on charges of being in possession of a firearm and ammunition illegally and possession of suspected stolen property. The two are scheduled to make their first court appearance, once charged.

In an unrelated matter, on 07 June 2023 at 12:15, Wolseley SAPS members were doing patrols when they spotted a suspicious looking man on the corners of Madani and Peace Street, Wolseley. The suspicious man tried to avoid the members who were approaching and ran away. While chasing him, he dropped an object upon which the members noticed that it was a .38 Smith and Weston revolver and six .rounds of ammunition. The suspect however got away but the firearm and ammunition were retrieved. An enquiry was open for further investigation. The firearm was handed in as exhibit, and will be send to examine for fingerprints.
