Globeleq Reaches Financial Close on Kenya’s First Utility Scale IPP Solar Project

NAIROBI, Kenya, June 3, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — Globeleq, a power sector leader in Africa, has reached financial close of the 40 MWAC (52 MW p) Malindi Solar photovoltaic (PV) project in Malindi, Kenya and is commencing construction of the plant.

The US$69 million project is located in Langobaya, Malindi District, Kilifi County, about 120 kms north-east of Mombasa and is one of the first IPP owned utility scale solar power plants in Kenya to begin construction.  Electricity will be sold through a 20-year agreement with the national distribution company, Kenya Power.

Globeleq has been working with the project originator, Africa Energy Development Corporation (AEDC), who will retain 10% ownership of the project, and its partner, IDEA Power, to bring the project to construction by providing equity, project development and construction management experience.  CDC, the UK’s development finance institution, as the mandated lead arranger, has sourced US$52 million in debt financing including $20 million from DEG, the German development finance institution.

The Engineering, Procurement and Construction company, Sterling and Wilson Solar is commencing with civil and electrical construction works. Land rights, environmental and local permits have been obtained, and the project team has been conducting regular community consultations.  Construction will take around twelve months with the plant reaching commercial operations in mid-2020.

It is expected the project will need around 250 workers during construction, many of which will be hired from the local community.  Globeleq will oversee the construction and operations of the power plant.

Globeleq Reaches Financial Close on South African Renewable Plants

LONDON, May 29, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — Globeleq has completed the acquisition in South Africa of four renewable generation plants and the asset management company from an affiliate of Brookfield Asset Management.

The addition of these entities strongly complements Globeleq’s existing renewable power business in South Africa where the company already owns, operates and manages 238MW of solar and wind projects. The solar assets acquired include Aries (11MW); Konkoonsies (11 MW) and Soutpan (31 MW) and the Klipheuwel wind farm (27 MW).  Acquisition of interests in the Boshof (66 MW) solar plant is expected to close in the coming weeks.  The projects originally reached commercial operations in 2014 and have a 20-year power purchase agreement with Eskom.

Chinese liquor maker Kweichow Moutai Group plans to donate five dollars to charity for each bottle of the newly launched series of liquors sold in Kenya

NAIROBI, Kenya, May 15, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — On May 13, 2019 at 10:30 am local time, Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Wu Peng met with some members of the Cultural Moutai · Colorful Guizhou delegation led by Kweichow Moutai Group deputy party secretary Wang Yan in Nairobi, during which Mr. Wu was informed that Moutai plans to collaborate with a third-party partner to roll out a series of Moutai liquors in Kenya as part of the company’s program for public welfare. According to the program, five dollars will be donated to the local government for rescuing local wildlife for each bottle of the newly launched product line up sold in the country.
