Burkina: Restitution of studies on generalized people’s war and the ideology of terrorists

The National Center for Strategic Studies returned five studies in 2022, including those on generalized people’s war, the ideology of armed terrorist groups and the use of military and civilian drones, said Thursday its Director General Aimée Barthélémy Simporé.

“The national center for strategic studies is a tool for anticipation, a unit for strategic reflection. It is therefore these missions to reflect on all that there is in our context and to propose solutions to the political authority, “said the director general of the National Center for Strategic Studies (CNES), General Aimée Barthelemy Simpore.

General Aimée Barthélémy Simporé spoke Thursday in Ouagadougou, on the occasion of the workshop for the restitution of the 2022 base studies of the National Center for Strategic Studies.

For Mr. Simporé, CNES conducted five (05) strategic studies during the last quarter of 2022.

For him, a first study focused on the dynamics of the activism of armed terrorist groups to better understand “how they recruit, what ideologies they follow and how they are articulated”.

According to him, another study focused on the geo-use of drones in the West African space, particularly military drones due to insecurity, but also civilian drones.

“These are new realities that must be integrated into governance in order to know what the challenges are related to this, what is the cardiography of these new tools in order to be able to find appropriate responses, especially in terms of legislation, regulation and protection of our territory,” said the former Minister of Defense and Veterans Affairs.

Then, the third study focused on the presence of foreign forces in Africa. For the DG of CNES, this study aims to identify the cooperating countries, to understand their dynamism and their implications in the national security strategy of Burkina Faso.

In addition, another study focused on generalized people’s war. According to him, it aims to know what content is given to this new concept and how to ensure that our country can implement citizen involvement adapted to the fight against terrorism so as to be able to prevent the risks linked to these new approaches to national security.

Finally, another study is devoted to cooperation, in particular everything there is as a structure for cooperation and collective security.

“There is the G5 Sahel, ECOWAS, UOMEA. It is therefore necessary to question all these organizations to find out what Burkina is gaining. What are the postures that must be developed and how to develop strategies adapted to our national security in relation to these different groupings”, he concluded
