Guinas: Swapo’s Moses Khumub has emerged victorious in the Guinas Constituency by-election, securing 1,407 votes and defeating his cousin, Fransiskus Khumub of the Landless People’s Movement, who received 612 votes.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the by-election, which took place on Friday, saw a total of 2,019 votes cast, with 22 ballots rejected. This electoral event was necessitated by the passing of former Swapo councillor Elias Kainda Marthinu in October 2024. The results were announced early on Saturday by Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) Presiding Officer, Sion Shikufinde, who confirmed that the election process adhered to the compliance standards set out in the Electoral Act.

The constituency had 4,331 registered voters, and the ECN facilitated the election with five fixed polling stations and four mobile stations. The process was overseen by nine teams comprising 50 polling officials and 18 police officers. Shikufinde noted a challenge faced during the election when some property owners denied ECN officials access to their premises, despite prior consultations. One such incident involved the ECN’s mobile team being locked out of a local lodge, which was resolved after extensive discussions.

Moses Khumub was absent during the announcement of the results at 04h00, and Swapo’s Oshikoto regional coordinator, Armas Amukwiyu, accepted the outcome on his behalf. In an interview with Nampa, Amukwiyu highlighted that this victory underscores Swapo’s continued influence in the region, reflecting the community’s trust in the party’s agenda and candidate. He emphasized the need for diligent efforts to address the social needs of Guinas constituency residents following the election outcome.
