Gobabis – Swapo Party Vice President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has called for agricultural diversification among Omaheke farmers, emphasizing the integration of livestock with crop or horticulture production. This appeal was made during a Swapo star rally in Gobabis on Sunday.
Nandi-Ndaitwah highlighted Omaheke’s potential as a production and industrial center but noted that agricultural activities in the region should extend beyond primary production within the value chain. She encouraged the establishment of value-addition industries, focusing on tapping into the region’s potential for growth. “The Omaheke Region has been regarded as not being suitable for crop production, but this notion is proven to be wrong,” she stated, referencing successful vegetable farming endeavors in the region.
According to Namibia Press Agency (NAMPA), perseverance in agriculture is essential, especially during challenging times. She reassured farmers that agriculture remains a priority for the ruling party, which is committed to the sector’s development. “When it comes to nation building and improving the lives of the people, there are key sectors that are critical for economic development,” she said.
Nandi-Ndaitwah also emphasized the importance of recognizing and capitalizing on the unique economic strengths of each region in Namibia. By doing so, the government can centralize economic growth and reduce informal sectors in both established and emerging towns, without promoting regionalism. She advocated for a shift in narrative towards a culture where agriculture is seen as a means to achieve self-reliance at the household level. “Agriculture creates needed employment and ensures food security,” she noted.
The Vice President concluded her address by stating that the party’s core agenda should focus on bridging the gap between the rich and the poor. The star rally was part of Swapo’s politburo decision to launch a mobilization drive aimed at strengthening direct contact with the masses and addressing issues of national concern.
This rally represents a significant step in Swapo’s efforts to engage with communities and promote sustainable economic development through agricultural diversification in Namibia.
