Swapo Party Announces Comprehensive Reshuffle of Parliamentary Representatives

Windhoek: Speaker of the National Assembly, Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila, announced on Tuesday a significant reshuffle involving Swapo Party Members of Parliament (MPs) across various standing committees, parliamentary friendship groups, and multilateral organizations. The changes, which were disclosed at the beginning of the parliamentary session, entail both the removal and reassignment of several party lawmakers, effective immediately. According to Namibia Press Agency, Swapo chief whip Alpheus Naruseb has been removed from his positions in the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and the Venezuela Parliamentary Friendship Group. Additionally, Swapo deputy secretary general Uahekua Herunga has been withdrawn from the Inter-Parliamentary Union, while Pohamba Shifeta, the former environment minister, is no longer part of the Standing Committee on Gender Equality, Health, and Social Welfare. The reshuffle also impacts Hilma Iita, who lost her membership in the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, and Joh n Likando, who was removed from the Germany Parliamentary Friendship Group. Kuugongelwa-Amadhila stated that these changes are part of the party's strategy to reorganize its parliamentary representation. Christine Haindaka is among those appointed to new roles, taking on responsibilities across several standing committees, including Urban and Rural Development and Land Reform, Information and Communication Technology, and Gender Equality, Health, and Social Welfare. She will also participate in Parliamentary Friendship Groups with the United Kingdom, Morocco, and Algeria, as well as the Parliamentarians for Global Action. Alpheus Naruseb is reassigned to the China Parliamentary Friendship Group, and former deputy prime minister Natangwe Ithete is set to join the Standing Committee on Budget and Finance, succeeding Elifas Dingara, who recently stepped down from Parliament. Ithete will also take over Herunga's role in the Inter-Parliamentary Union. Hilaria Mukapuli and Justina Jonas are newly appointed to th e Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, taking over from Naruseb and Iita, respectively. Jonas will also replace Sharonice Bush in the Inter-Parliamentary Union. Additionally, both Ipumbu Shiimi and Iita have been allocated roles in the Parliamentarians for Global Action, while Marlene Mbakera is set to join the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, succeeding Feni Nanyeni. First-time Member of Parliament Modestus Atshipala has been assigned to the Germany Parliamentary Friendship Group, replacing Likando. Kuugongelwa-Amadhila concluded the announcements by formally declaring the appointments of the mentioned members to their new roles.
