OMUTHIYA: Swapo’s presidential candidate, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, has announced the party’s strategic commitment to resolving Namibia’s ongoing water crisis by 2027. Speaking at the Swapo Oshikoto Star rally in Omuthiya, she outlined a plan involving a N$1.5 billion investment aimed at addressing water shortages across the Oshikoto Region.
According to Namibia News Agency, Nandi-Ndaitwah emphasized the importance of trusting the party’s efforts to provide sustainable water solutions. Namwater, the national water utility, has begun site assessments to construct booster pump stations in the Eengodi, Okankolo, Omuthiya, and Olukonda constituencies. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to improve water access and supply throughout the region.
Nandi-Ndaitwah also mentioned that the Namibian government plans to engage neighboring countries to collaborate on water resource management. She assured attendees that the government is committed to implementing long-term solutions to the water crisis, with compl
etion anticipated by 2027. Additionally, she revealed ongoing projects worth N$91 million, including upgrades to the Ondangwa-Omutsegwonime pipeline, aimed at enhancing the water infrastructure in Oshikoto.
In a bid to support early childhood development, the government has installed water tanks at 50 centers in the Oshikoto Region, benefiting over 1,308 children. Nandi-Ndaitwah attributed the region’s water shortages to the impacts of climate change, highlighting reduced water levels and pressure as significant challenges that have led to the drying up of boreholes.
The rally attracted thousands of attendees from across the Oshikoto Region, demonstrating widespread interest and concern over the water crisis and Swapo’s proposed solutions.
