Suspects to appear in court over R700 000-00 illegal drugs and ammunition

The vigilance and rapid response by members attached to the Anti Economic and Extortion task team ensured that a 36 year old foreign national, a suspected drug pedlar gets his day in court after he was caught in possession of drugs with an estimated value of R700 000-00.

On Saturday, 27 May 2023 at about 09:00, the members operationalised information received of a vehicle transporting a consignment of drugs on the N7. Even though the members were on rest days at the time of the tip-off, they placed themselves on duty and positioned themselves on the N7. When the members spotted the vehicle that fitted the description given, they pulled it off the road and ensued with a search. They discovered tik to the value of R50 000.00.

Further investigation led the members to the suspect’s residents where they found and seized a substantial quantity of drugs to the estimated value if about R650 000.00 (3689 Mandrax tablets and Tik and 619 Ecstasy Tablets) as well as an undisclosed amount of cash, believed to be the proceeds of illegal drug trafficking and dealing. The find was confiscated as evidence and the accused was apprehended and detained.

The 36 year old suspect faces a charge of dealing in drugs. He is expected to appear in the Goodwood Magistrates’ court later today, Monday, 29 May 2023 on mentioned charge.

In an unrelated incident on Friday, 26 May 2023 at about 23:00, members of the Rural Flying doing duty at a vehicle checkpoint on the N7 near Clanwilliam pulled over a vehicle with five occupants suspected of transporting illegal firearms and ammunition and ensued with a search. A 42 year old suspect was found in possession of 34 9mm rounds of ammunition. He was arrested on the spot and the ammunition confiscated as evidence.

He is scheduled to appear in the Clanwilliam Magistrates’ court later today, Monday, 29 May 2023 on a charge of Illegal possession of ammunition.
