The 31-year-old man who allegedly stabbed to death his girlfriend, Auguste Jonas at Otjiwarongo on Sunday night appeared for the first time at the town’s magistrate’s court on Wednesday morning. The accused, Protasius Kuuvilwa appeared before magistrate Peingondjabi Shipo who explained to him his legal rights to either engage a private lawyer of his choice; apply for a State-funded lawyer through the Ministry of Justice’s Directorate of Legal Aid; or defend himself in court. Kuuvilwa opted to apply for a Legal Aid lawyer. Public prosecutor, Eva Hamutwe appeared for the State in the matter and objected to the granting of bail to Kuuvilwa, saying it would not be in the interest of the public and that of the administration of justice for the accused to be released on bail at this stage. Hamutwe further said Kuuvilwa might abscond trial if he is released on bail as he faces a serious charge of murder. Kuuvilwa was then remanded in police custody and his case was postponed to 27 June 2023 for police investigations and also to allow him, to apply for a Legal Aid lawyer. It is alleged that the 28-year-old Jonas died instantly in the Telecom location at Otjiwarongo in her bedroom where Kuuvilwa stabbed her 13 times all over her body at approximately, 20h45 on Sunday. Jonas also suffered 10 deep stab wounds.
