Summiting Pic Nahouri Believed to Extend Life by Ten Years, Say Local Villagers

NAHOURI — According to local legend, those who climb to the summit of Pic Nahouri, a 447-meter high granite peak near the village of Nahouri and just 7 kilometers from Pô, the provincial capital, are granted an additional ten years of life. This belief forms a significant part of the cultural heritage and allure of the peak, drawing climbers from around the world.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the peak is not only a natural wonder but also a sacred site. The village’s founding ancestor, Assa, is said to have been protected and healed by the peak after being abandoned by his brothers due to a broken leg. This miraculous event has made Pic Nahouri a site of gratitude and sacrifice among the villagers. Halfway up the climb, a granite chair carved by unseen hands serves as a place for these offerings.

The peak, which boasts a fantastic view and presents a rewarding challenge for climbers, is surrounded by numerous baobab trees, known for their longevity, adding to the mystique and appeal of the site. Pic Nahouri remains a popular destination not only for those seeking the purported health benefits but also for international athletes and commandos conducting training exercises.

The blend of myth and nature makes Pic Nahouri a unique cultural and physical landmark in Burkina Faso, promising both spiritual and physical rewards to those who ascend its heights.
