Subukia: Farmers in Subukia Subcounty have received a significant boost with the delivery of 600 bags of subsidized NPK fertilizer, a move expected to enhance crop yields and alleviate food scarcity in the region. The distribution of the vital agricultural input comes at a crucial time, as local farmers grapple with escalating production costs.
According to Kenya News Agency, NPK fertilizer, containing essential nutrients for plant growth, is anticipated to play a pivotal role in maximizing yields during the current planting season. The delivery was overseen by Eng. Michael Kamau, Nakuru County Executive Committee Member for Infrastructure, representing the county government’s agriculture department. The event was also attended by representatives from the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) and officials from the Kabazi Ward MCA’s office, highlighting the collaborative effort behind this initiative.
Subukia Subcounty is among those benefiting from the county’s subsidized fertilizer program, a strategic move by the Nakuru County Government to support its agricultural sector. Eng. Kamau said the provision of subsidized fertilizer is expected to have a significant positive impact on food security within Nakuru County. By enabling farmers to improve their crop yields, this initiative directly addresses the issue of food scarcity, specifically, increased crop production, reduced production costs, and enhanced food security.
While addressing the farmers, Eng. Kamau said the NPK fertilizer provides essential nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, which are crucial for healthy plant growth, and assured them that there was no need for the mixing of the fertilizer with DAP, which most farmers tend to prefer because that’s what they are used to. Additionally, he said the county was committed to the distribution of subsidized fertilizer because it helps to lower the financial burden on farmers, allowing them to invest more resources in other essential farming practices.
Also, the CECM emphasized that higher crop yields translate to greater food availability, contributing to improved food security within Nakuru County. Farming is the main livelihood for many in the region, so by increasing yields and reducing costs, the overall economic health of the community improves. The Nakuru County Government’s focus on supporting its farmers underscores the importance of agriculture in the region’s economy and its commitment to ensuring food security for residents.
