Migori: The Suba Council of Elders in Migori, led by Chairperson Mzee Japheth Riogi Riogi, has urged local chiefs and leaders to embark on sensitisation campaigns aimed at educating the youth on the significance of acquiring National Identification Cards (ID) and registering to vote.
According to Kenya News Agency, during a weekend gathering at a local hotel where the elders received New Year gifts from the Migori County administration, the elders encouraged young people to prepare for and participate in the electoral process by voting for leaders of integrity. Riogi highlighted the importance of unity among Gen Z, referencing their solidarity during the Finance Bill protests in June 2024, and encouraged them to use online platforms to support ID acquisition and voter registration.
Riogi emphasized that youth, who constitute more than 75 percent of the country's population, have the potential to drive meaningful change through their unity. He also expressed the elders' commitment to supporting the current government at both county and national levels to ensure that political pledges are honored.
The Chairperson appealed for unity and cohesion, particularly amongst the political class, criticizing their history of inciting violence through hired goons during election periods. Additionally, Riogi thanked Migori County, under Governor Ochilo Ayacko, for their recognition of the Suba community during the 2025 December Piny Luo festival, which showcased the talents, traditions, and cultures of various communities within the county.
Migori County is characterized by its multi-ethnic composition, including Luo, Kuria, Luhya-Maragolis, Somalis, Subas, Nubi, and Abagusi communities. This diversity forms a rich inter-community blend living in harmony.
Riogi also stated the intention of the Suba community and other minority groups to continue advocating for the National Assembly to implement the Ethnic Minority and Marginalised Communities Draft Bill, 2025. The draft Bill aims to provide a framework for recognizing, including, and engaging ethnic minorities and marginalized communities in national dialogue, promoting equality, cohesion, and respect for cultural and linguistic diversity.
While acknowledging the county's efforts to integrate marginalized groups, Riogi called for increased efforts at both county and national levels to foster inclusivity, harmony, peace, and love among all communities.
