Students at Tcheriba High School Take Stand Against STIs and HIV/AIDS

Mouhoun: The Tcheriba Departmental High School recently became a focal point in the fight against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV/AIDS, hosting an awareness mission led by the Health, Inclusive Education, Equity, and Gender Commission in collaboration with the Dedougou Volunteer Coordination (CVD). This initiative, aimed at educating students and staff, is part of broader efforts by a ministerial committee focused on combating AIDS.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the program seeks to enhance preventive measures in educational settings, which are seen as essential in reaching young people who are particularly vulnerable. Burkina Faso's national prevalence rate for these infections stands at 2.34%, prompting continued efforts to curb their spread. Schools serve as strategic venues for these awareness activities due to their high youth attendance.

Mathias Koumbem, the school principal, expressed his support for the initiative, emphasizing its importance in combating the spread of STIs and HIV/AIDS within schools. Justine Nikiema/Tamini, who led the mission, highlighted the objective to alert students to the dangers of risky sexual behavior and the repercussions of STIs and early pregnancies. She stressed that the campaign's goal is to promote responsible behavior, with abstinence as the advised preventive measure.

The session included interactive discussions, helping students grasp the risks of early sexual activity and the associated consequences such as school dropout, health issues, and social challenges. Badolo Bazombo¨ and Assana Doro, students who actively participated, received recognition for their insightful contributions, encouraging them to act as peer ambassadors.

The mission also extended its outreach to the local General Education College (CEG), where students echoed their commitment to the fight against STIs and HIV/AIDS, reinforcing the collective effort to foster awareness and prevention.
