Bougouriba: A student is on trial in Diebougou for defaming the police on TikTok. The correctional chamber of the High Court (TGI) of Diebougou reviewed a defamation case involving KP, a third-year undergraduate student in mining and quarrying. KP is charged with making remarks considered damaging to the honor of the National Police of Diebougou in a TikTok video.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the video, which surfaced on March 5, 2026, accused the Diebougou National Police of extorting money from passengers at a checkpoint on the Diebougou-Bobo-Dioulasso road. The alleged extortion amounts mentioned in the video ranged from 2,000 to 30,000 CFA francs.
In court, KP admitted to creating the video but confessed to not having witnessed extortion or possessing evidence to substantiate his claims. He explained that the video was made without understanding its implications and mentioned that it was deleted on the same day.
KP expressed his willingness to release a new video to raise awareness and issue a retraction to amend the damage to the police's image.
The prosecution concluded that defamation had occurred and requested a guilty verdict. They proposed that KP be sentenced to 160 hours of community service in Bondigui, his hometown, along with a fine of 500,000 CFA francs.
The court has reserved its decision, which is anticipated on March 25, 2026.
