Steenkamp Calls for Preservation of Liberation History

Windhoek: Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture, Sanet Steenkamp, has called for the preservation and documentation of Namibia's liberation history to ensure it remains accessible to future generations. Steenkamp made the remarks in Windhoek during the handover of about 400 coffee table books documenting the life of Namibia's Founding President and Father of the Namibian Nation, Sam Nujoma, to schools and public libraries across the country.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the books were handed over by New Era Publication Corporation Board Chairperson John Sifani and Chinese Ambassador to Namibia Zhao Weiping. The donation coincided with Nujoma's birthday on 12 May, which is commemorated as Nujoma Day and National Tree Planting Day. Steenkamp emphasized the importance of preserving stories of those who sacrificed for Namibia's liberation, noting that libraries play a crucial role in providing information to children, youth, researchers, and the public.

Speaking at the event, Chairperson of the Sam Nujoma Foundation, Nahas Angula, urged librarians to encourage learners to engage with the book. He expressed concern about competition from social media, urging that the book should not be neglected. Sifani also shared his hope that the books will be actively used in schools and displayed in libraries nationwide.

Ambassador Weiping, speaking on behalf of the Chinese Embassy, highlighted the donation's role in helping young Namibians access their country's history and learn about its liberation heroes. The book was officially launched in Windhoek in June 2025 by former President Nangolo Mbumba.
