On January 27, the 78th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz Nazi concentration camp by the Soviet army, the International Holocaust Remembrance Day is commemorated and Greece, following a unanimous decision of the Hellenic Parliament, honours in particular the memory of the Greek Jewish martyrs and heroes of this inhuman tragedy.
As the number of the eyewitnesses around us diminishes, it is a historical and moral duty of us all, on this day and every day, to remember those dark moments in Europe, to continue to investigate this past in depth and, to “keep the memory alive” – as this year’s events are titled – to new generations. So as to ensure a future that is peaceful, democratic and free from racist hatred, anti-Semitism and other forms of discrimination against our fellow human beings.
This is the way to pass on knowledge and memory, but also the way to deal with those who do not wish to know or remember, so that such a calamity could NEVER occur AGAIN.
