Today marks yet another sad anniversary of the illegal declaration of the pseudo-state in the occupied territory of Cyprus by Turkey.
This anniversary is a reminder of the flagrant violation of the fundamental Principles of the United Nations Charter and of International Law for the 38th consecutive year.
Unfortunately, Turkey is still the only country that ostentatiously disregards the explicit condemnation of the declaration of this illegal and secessionist entity by the United Nations Security Council with Resolutions 541/1983 and 550/1984.
Added to Turkey’s continuous contempt for the aforementioned Resolutions and International Law, there have been the illegal Turkish attempts to create new fait accomplis in Varosha, in clear violation of UNSC Resolution 789/1992, the violations in Cyprus’ maritime zones, as well as the insistence on unacceptable demands for a so-called “solution” of two states, outside the framework of the Security Council Resolutions.
Greece will continue to support the efforts of the Republic of Cyprus for the resumption of negotiations, as well as for the settlement of the Cyprus issue and the island’s reunification on the basis of the Security Council Resolutions and the European acquis. For a reunited Cyprus, free from the occupying troops and the anachronistic system of guarantees.
