MACHAKOS: The Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the Safaricom Foundation and Vodafone Foundation, has announced the launch of a Sh240 million digital skills program aimed at enhancing ICT capabilities in teachers training colleges across the country. The initiative, named the ‘Scaling Digital Skills Program’, seeks to empower teachers with necessary digital skills to improve teaching and learning methodologies.
According to Kenya News Agency, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba highlighted the government’s commitment to strengthening the ICT infrastructure in 35 Teachers Training Colleges (TTCs) nationwide. Speaking at the Machakos Teachers College, Ogamba emphasized the program’s alignment with the Competence Based Education Training (CBET) framework, which aims to develop digital literacy among educators and learners.
Ogamba underscored the necessity of integrating ICT as a pedagogical tool in the modern classroom, stressing its importance for both teachers and students in adapting to the
demands of the 21st century. Safaricom Foundation Chairman Joseph Ogutu echoed these sentiments, stating that investing in digital programs is crucial for enhancing education outcomes in the digital era. The program will provide TTCs with digital tools, thereby preparing future educators to deliver technology-integrated education.
Ogutu noted that the program includes the renovation and construction of ICT facilities in eight TTCs, including Machakos, Eregi, Asumbi, Egogi, Kamweja, Garissa, and Kericho. Machakos TTC Chief Principal Joyce Mabwai praised the initiative, noting the significant improvements to their ICT infrastructure, which now includes two renovated computer labs with new computers, projectors, and enhanced internet access.
The event was attended by various dignitaries, including Machakos County Commissioner Josephine Ouko, Deputy County Commissioner David Rotich, and Machakos Director for Education Margaret Muirigi, alongside other education officials.
