Kiserian: Involvement of school-going children in matters of elective leadership has emerged as a key measure that provides a platform for them to articulate and find solutions to grievances affecting them. Kajiado North Sub-county Children Officer Ms Nancy Kemunto emphasized the importance of child participation during the Kajiado North Children Assembly elections.
According to Kenya News Agency, the State Department for Children Services is prioritizing child involvement in societal issues that impact their welfare. Ms. Kemunto highlighted that through these Assemblies, children are given the opportunity to exercise their civic rights, which are recognized by CAP 141 of the Children Act and the Kenyan Constitution 2010.
Ms. Kemunto stated, "The reason why we are here is to ensure that we have given a platform to our children to exercise their civic rights by electing their leaders and that is child participation, which is very key in a child's life." She reiterated the legal backing, emphasizing that child participation is mandated by law to ensure children can voice their concerns.
Jasmine Sianto, a learner and presidential candidate at the Assembly, underscored the importance of such platforms for addressing challenges children face. Sianto remarked, "The reason as to why I'm running for this seat to fight for children's rights. Through me, I can bring children's concerns to be heard."
Prudence Njiru, a Governor candidate, highlighted the educational aspect of the Assemblies, noting how they expose children to the voting process and the qualities to look for in leaders. "It helps us to know the protocols, what to do in an election and how to choose your leaders," Njiru stated.
Stakeholders at the event, including Ben Muia, Director at Nyumba ya Tumaini, addressed challenges such as drug and alcohol abuse, family separation, and poverty that hinder education. Muia explained, "Some of the challenges that make these children not go to school are simple things like uniforms."
The event, themed 'My Right, My Future', brought together children from various schools within Kajiado North Sub-county to elect their officials, including positions like President, Governor, Speaker, and Clerk.
