Accra: The Ohangwena Region recorded a smooth special voting process for the Regional Councils and Local Authorities elections on Monday, with all polling stations opening on time and without major incidents.
According to Namibia Press Agency, ECN Regional Electoral Officer, Henock Hanga, informed Nampa during an interview at one of the polling stations in Eenhana that the process began 'on a good note,' with all stations fully operational by 09h00. Less than 100 voters cast their votes throughout the region, he revealed. Some polling stations experienced morning queues, but these eased as the day progressed.
Hanga noted that there had been initial confusion among some voters regarding who was eligible to vote on the day. However, he credited the region's returning officers for swiftly clarifying the matter. According to him, voting on the day was specifically intended for police officers and polling officials deployed outside the constituencies where they are registered. 'If a person is registered in Eenhana and is working outside their constituency on national voting day, then those are the people expected for special voting and the same with polling officials,' he explained.
Despite minor confusion, the voting system operated efficiently. 'The tables are very fast. It can take you less than five minutes from the time you walk into the polling station, until you walk out,' Hanga said. Hanga said the region is fully prepared for the main elections on Wednesday. Electoral teams will be deployed to distant areas such as Okongo and Oshikunde on Tuesday to ensure all logistics and materials are in place ahead of polling day. 'We are deploying teams going far because we want them to settle and make sure they have everything in order. We are just waiting for you to come and cast your vote,' he said.
