Kunene: Early strong voter turnout was observed in Opuwo, as the special voting exercise began at the three polling stations in the Kunene Region on Wednesday. The voting process started at 07h00 and will run until 21h00 countrywide and is designed to accommodate the security cluster who will be on duty during the ordinary national elections on 27 November, seagoing personnel, as well as Namibians in the diaspora.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the Electoral Commission of Namibia’s (ECN) Kunene Regional Electoral Officer, Mike Nganjone, confirmed that the voting process began smoothly with no glitches reported at all three stations, with the Opuwo polling station leading in terms of voter turnout. “We opened our doors at all voting booths at 07h00. Even though it is the first day of elections, everything is functioning smoothly, and no difficulties have been reported. I should also mention that the Opuwo polling station has gotten off to a good start, with over 100 voters casting their ballots in the fir
st three hours of voting,” he stated.
Kunene has three designated polling stations located at the Khorixas Police Station, Okangwati Combined School in the Epupa constituency, and Opuwo Police Station. Nganjone further stated that for the ECN to fulfil its mandate of free and fair elections, all political party agents and election observers are present at voting stations. ECN said on Monday that 33 polling sites had been established around the country to cater for the special voting process.
Namibia will be holding Presidential and National Assembly Elections on 27 November, in which 21 political parties will compete for 96 legislative seats, with 15 of those parties also fielding presidential candidates. More than 1.4 million people are registered to vote in Namibian’s 2024 elections.
