Embu – In a significant development for the welfare of children involved in legal proceedings, the Embu law courts have dedicated special rooms designed specifically for cases involving children. This initiative aims to create a child-friendly environment, making the legal process less intimidating for young participants.
According to Kenya News Agency, the introduction of these rooms is a response to the vulnerability of children who come to court, whether as minors in conflict with the law or as victims of crime. The magistrate highlighted the importance of such a space in helping children cope with the trauma associated with court proceedings.
The children’s courtroom is uniquely decorated with bright colors and cartoon characters to create a welcoming and comforting atmosphere. Additionally, a “happy place” has been established where children can engage in various activities such as playing with toys, reading books, or drawing. This area is intended to provide a distraction and a sense of normalcy for children amidst the court proceedings.
For practical considerations, the premises are equipped with quality sanitary facilities and other amenities tailored to the needs of children. One of the key features of these rooms is a separate interview room designed to ensure the privacy and comfort of young visitors.
A critical aspect of the setup is a specially designed witness box equipped with a one-way visual interface. This innovation allows children to testify without having to face their alleged violators directly, addressing the common fear among children of confronting those who may have harmed them in a courtroom setting.
Grace Mwangi, a representative from the children’s charity Lumos, commended the initiative, noting that it was conceived to provide a relaxed environment for children during what can be a stressful experience. She expressed hope that similar projects would be implemented in courts across the country.
Daveline Mundi, the Embu County Co-coordinator of Children’s Services, lauded the project, stating that it ensures children’s matters are addressed in a friendly and supportive space. She described the initiative as the best New Year gift for the children of Embu, signifying a positive step towards child-centric legal proceedings.
