South Sudanese Minister Commends Ethiopia’s Infrastructure Efforts as Key to Regional Integration


Juba – Pal Mai Deng, the South Sudanese Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, recently praised Ethiopia for its extensive infrastructure development, which he considers crucial for achieving regional integration. During an exclusive interview with the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA), Deng highlighted the significance of such initiatives in fostering regional unity and social cohesion across East Africa.



According to Ethiopian News Agency, the development of shared regional infrastructure, particularly in electricity, roads, and railways, is vital for the communities along the borders of the region. He pointed out that Ethiopia has been proactive in undertaking various infrastructure projects that benefit not only its own population but also the wider Horn of Africa.



The regional body IGAD, committed to boosting regional integration, recently launched the Ground Water Access Facility (GaFa) initiative in the Somali region of Ethiopia with the aim of addressing the critical water scarcity affecting millions in the Horn of Africa. Deng noted the potential of this project to enhance cooperation, particularly among border communities, stating that it would improve the livelihoods of these communities, promote development, and foster bilateral relations and technical cooperation between countries. He emphasized the project’s role in facilitating the exchange of knowledge and experience.



Furthermore, Deng mentioned the Ethio-Djibouti potable water project as an example of beneficial regional collaboration, which economically integrates the populations of Ethiopia and Djibouti. He expressed gratitude towards the Ethiopian government for its contribution, particularly in providing clean and safe drinking water to Djibouti, a country that struggles with water scarcity due to its arid conditions.



Deng also highlighted the longstanding and multifaceted relationship between Ethiopia and South Sudan, emphasizing the critical role of Ethiopia in driving economic linkages and regional integration within East Africa.
