Pretoria: South Africa's Group of Twenty (G20) Presidency has initiated a groundbreaking project aimed at tackling global wealth inequality, a pressing issue that is poised to worsen. The initiative will result in a comprehensive report on global inequality, produced by a team of distinguished economic experts.
According to South African Government News Agency, the initiative is being led by Professor Joseph E. Stiglitz, a Nobel Economics Prize Laureate, and involves a committee of six independent experts. The committee's task is to assess the current state of wealth and income inequality and its effects on growth, poverty, and multilateralism. They will also propose effective solutions for G20 leaders to consider.
President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed pride in launching this initiative, emphasizing its significance as the first of its kind for the G20. He noted the critical nature of addressing global wealth inequality, which poses systemic risks to economic, social, and political progress. Recent analyses highlight that the world's richest 1% have significantly increased their wealth, exacerbating the divide between the wealthy and the rest of the world.
The growing challenges of global trade disruptions, international financing uncertainties, and imbalanced tax regimes contribute to the deepening inequality, creating difficulties for policymakers, consumers, and businesses. The expert committee includes Dr. Adriana E. Abdenur from Brazil, Ms. Winnie Byanyima from Uganda, Professor Jayati Ghosh from India, Professor Imraan Valodia from South Africa, and Dr. Wanga Zembe-Mkabile from South Africa. Their collective expertise will be crucial in formulating strategies to address the inequality issue.
Professor Stiglitz emphasized the urgency of addressing the widening inequality and its threat to democracy. He commended President Ramaphosa for prioritizing inequality on the G20 agenda and stressed the need for transformative policy proposals. Professor Jayati Ghosh highlighted the importance of evidence-based strategies in dealing with contemporary economic challenges, noting that ongoing processes and recent shocks have intensified inequality worldwide.
The G20 Extraordinary Committee of Independent Experts on Global Wealth Inequality operates under the G20 Sherpa's Office in South Africa's Department of International Relations and Cooperation. This initiative represents a significant step in addressing the profound challenges posed by global wealth inequality.
