Tougan: The city of Tougan was abuzz from March 21 to 22, 2026, with the regional qualifying rounds of the national traditional wrestling championship. These 48 hours of competition aimed to select the 27 wrestlers from the Sourou and Bankui regions for the national phase.
According to Burkina Information Agency, more than one hundred wrestlers from the Sourou and Bankui regions competed in Tougan, in the province of Sourou, to identify the best competitors called upon to represent their regions at the national level. The president of the regional traditional wrestling league, Benjamin Kawane, indicated that the level of the competitors is satisfactory and that 27 wrestlers have been selected to defend the colors of the two regions during the national traditional wrestling championship.
"It is through these qualifying rounds that we identify the best, train them further and send them to the national level," Kawane stated. Among those who qualified is the wrestler from Nayala, Drissa Zon, who expressed his readiness to represent the two regions with dignity at the national level. "I am fully ready to defend our region, with God's will and the support of everyone," he affirmed.
Commander Karim Soabo, representing the event's sponsors, emphasized the importance of their support for the development of traditional wrestling, a sporting and cultural discipline in San country. The High Commissioner of Sourou Province, Desire Badolo, expressed his satisfaction with the successful organization of the event. He praised the professionalism of all involved, congratulated the selected competitors, and encouraged them to represent their regions well, much like the fighting forces on the battlefield, in order to bring home medals and bring joy to the people.
Besides Drissa Zon, well-known names from the arenas, such as Drissa Toe, Abdoul Gafour Ki, Nemawa Banao, Rihanata Diallo, and Diane Ki, are also among the athletes selected to represent the Sourou and Bankui regions.
