Bobasi: Bobasi MP in Kisii County, Innocent Obiri, has advocated for a well-managed national economy if the country is to tame the current runaway unemployment. The lawmaker observed that a vibrant economy will lead to the growth of industries, thereby creating numerous job opportunities.
According to Kenya News Agency, Obiri emphasized these points while presiding over Nyamache Secondary School’s Education Day and prize-giving ceremony in the constituency. He explained that with a sound economy, there would be no need for qualified youth to take on jobs that undermine their dignity or to seek employment assistance from elected leaders.
The legislator noted the presence of over 200 secondary schools in the electoral area, highlighting that the disbursement of NG-CDF bursaries is inadequate to cater to all needy learners due to the high number of eligible students. He advised the school management to submit a proposal to his office for the construction of a perimeter wall and the procurement of a standby generator, recognizing these as challenges faced by the school.
Elkanah Onyando, the board of management chairman, who had initially requested funding for the two projects, praised the cooperation from the Education Ministry through the area sub-county office in implementing key policies.
The school principal, Hezron Obike, expressed concerns over chronic absenteeism, fearing it could compromise the school’s performance in national examinations. He attributed this issue to parents or guardians failing to meet their fee payment obligations, which forces learners to stay at home. Obike acknowledged that the affected learners come from poor family backgrounds and urged the MP to seek donors to sponsor these needy students.
During the occasion, a total of 164 students who sat last year’s KCSE and qualified to join public universities were awarded various prizes.
