Soum: Djibo D School Committed to Food Sovereignty

Djibo: The Djibo D school is part of the national dynamic of promoting food sovereignty through an educational garden, combining agricultural production and practical training of students. In the Soum province, local initiatives in favor of food sovereignty are gradually strengthening, thanks to an improving security context.

According to Burkina Information Agency, in Djibo, the Djibo D school stands out for its implementation of an educational garden, mobilizing teachers and students around agricultural activities. Since October 2025, the schoolyard has been transformed into a production area where various crops are grown, including onions, cabbage, lettuce, peppers, corn, mint, and papayas. This initiative provides students with an opportunity to acquire practical agricultural skills while actively participating in production.

This Wednesday, the school reached a significant milestone with the potato harvest, the culmination of several months of effort. This activity allowed students to see firsthand the results of their commitment, after experimenting with cultivation techniques, including propagation by cuttings, which they began last January.

This project pursues a dual objective. On the one hand, it contributes to strengthening the school canteen through the local production of food. On the other hand, it contributes to the civic education of students by instilling in them the values of work, autonomy, and connection to the land.

The High Commissioner of the Soum province, Mr. Wend Nere Wilfried TOUGMA, welcomed this initiative led by the Basic Education District (CEB) of Djibo 2 and encouraged other schools to follow suit, in order to consolidate the foundations of a resilient, autonomous, and prosperous province.
