Somalia Joins East African Community Under President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s Leadership

Arusha, Tanzania – Somalia has been officially inducted as the newest member of the East African Community (EAC), marking a significant milestone in the nation’s history. The announcement came during the 23rd Summit of the EAC Heads of State, held in Arusha, Tanzania, on November 24, 2023. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud represented Somalia at the summit, where the nation’s membership was unanimously approved by the other EAC leaders.

According to Somali National News Agency, President Mohamud expressed his gratitude and optimism regarding Somalia’s future within the EAC, viewing it as a step towards greater opportunities and capabilities for Somali society. He noted that Somalia’s membership signifies the country’s commitment to strengthening friendships, participating in collective progress, and choosing a better future for the people of the region.

The President also reflected on the efforts initiated in 2016 to secure Somalia’s place in the EAC, emphasizing the access it grants the Somali people to the global market, business opportunities, and travel facilities. He acknowledged the contributions of experts and diplomats in facilitating Somalia’s acceptance into the EAC.

Somalia’s inclusion in the EAC, which comprises Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, and Uganda, is seen as beneficial for both the country and the region. President Mohamud highlighted Somalia’s fertile land, strategic location, and trade-eager populace as assets to the East African community.

Dr. Peter Mathuki, the EAC Secretary-General, welcomed Somalia as the eighth member state. He commended the Somali government and people for their achievement and underscored the potential for Somalia’s membership to bolster regional integration, development, peace, and stability. “Somalia’s membership will bring more value and strength to the EAC, and will contribute to the realization of our common goals and aspirations,” Dr. Mathuki stated, emphasizing the anticipation of collaborative efforts to advance the EAC agenda and harness Somalia’s potential.
