Somalia and Italy Formalize Media Partnership to Enhance News Exchange and Expertise

ROME, ITALY – A landmark media cooperation and partnership agreement was signed between the Somali National News Agency (SONNA) and the Italian News Agency (ANSA) in a ceremony attended by the Somali Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr. Daud Aweis Jama.

According to Somali National News Agency, the agreement aims to bolster the exchange of news and information between the two countries and to provide mutual support in terms of expertise, training, and equipment.

Mr. Daud Aweis Jama expressed the significance of this agreement for Somalia’s development and its integration into the global community. He emphasized that SONNA serves as an essential conduit for news for both domestic and international audiences, and the partnership with ANSA would strengthen its capacity and quality. Additionally, he underscored the enduring friendship and collaboration between Somalia and Italy.

The accord was signed by Mr. Ismail Mukhtar Omar, the Director General of SONNA, representing Somalia, and Mr. Stefano De Alessandri, the Director General of ANSA, representing Italy. The event was also attended by officials from the Somali Embassy in Italy and representatives from ANSA.

SONNA, established in 1964, has been a consistent source of reliable news both within and outside Somalia, serving public interest and enabling access to information. In the past year, the agency has made significant strides in news production and external relations, becoming a trusted source for up to 60 international media outlets on a weekly basis.
