Somali President Seeks Climate Action and Support at COP28 in Dubai

Mogadishu – President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of the Federal Republic of Somalia arrived in Dubai on Tuesday to participate in the World Climate Change Conference (COP28), hosted in the United Arab Emirates from November 27 to December 8. The conference, attended by world leaders, experts, and activists, focuses on accelerating the Paris Agreement’s implementation and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, while enhancing the global response to climate change.

According to Somali National News Agency, During the conference, President Mohamud plans to address the severe impact of climate change on Somalia, emphasizing the suffering of the Somali people due to El Niño-induced flooding. These floods have led to widespread displacement, livelihood destruction, increased food insecurity, and malnutrition.

The President will also discuss the importance of international support for Somalia’s climate crisis strategies. These include enhancing resilience, promoting renewable energy, and restoring degraded land. Additionally, President Mohamud intends to hold bilateral meetings with other world leaders and partners, seeking urgent assistance for Somali flood victims and mobilizing resources for recovery and reconstruction efforts.
