Solhan A School’s First Onion Harvest Marks Success for Local Food Initiative

Solhan: The students and teaching staff of Solhan A Primary School harvested their first onions from their school garden on Monday, March 23rd and Tuesday, March 24th, 2026. This activity, carried out with the support of the school council, yielded an estimated two sacks of onions, in addition to usable leaves. This initiative is part of a broader effort to promote locally sourced food in school canteens and strengthen food self-sufficiency within the school community.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the school's director, Amadou Tamboura, noted that the results achieved exceeded expectations despite limited resources. He praised the commitment of the teachers and students, emphasizing that this production will contribute to the school's internal consumption and to sales to help cover certain expenses. He also appealed to anyone willing to donate equipment to ensure the sustainability of the activity, which he considers both useful and educational for the students.

For his part, Bako Bali, the chief inspector of the Sebba basic education district, expressed his satisfaction with this initial project, which he described as encouraging. He congratulated all those involved for their efforts and indicated that this experience serves as a model to be promoted in other schools within the district. He also assured them that steps would be taken to relay the expressed needs to higher authorities.
