Baidoa, Southwest State, Somalia – The Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) has initiated a crucial food aid delivery to the flood-affected people in Baidoa, the administrative capital of the Southwest State.
According to Somali National News Agency, this response comes amidst a challenging situation caused by heavy autumn rains leading to widespread flooding in southern and central regions of Somalia.
The agency has dispatched 7 tons of foodstuffs to Baidoa, which has been severely impacted by the floods. The situation has escalated to a point where, as reported by the Prime Minister yesterday, half a million people have been displaced, and over 1 million affected.
The Minister of Information further stated that the number of people impacted by the flash floods could increase to 1.2 million as the death toll from the floods has risen to 31. The heavy rains have forced over half a million residents to leave their homes, affecting the entire country.
The distribution of food aid by SoDMA is a part of the Somali government’s broader efforts to provide relief to those affected by the natural disaster. The situation in Baidoa and other affected regions remains critical, with the need for continued support and assistance to manage the aftermath of the floods.
The ongoing response by SoDMA and other agencies highlights the urgent need for effective disaster management strategies and the importance of timely humanitarian assistance in mitigating the impact of such natural catastrophes.
