Sissili Canton Chiefs Unite to Promote Gourounsi Identity

Sissili: The royal palace of Leo hosted a strategic meeting on Saturday, January 10, 2026, between the chiefs of the seven cantons of the Sissili province. Under the auspices of His Majesty Lio-Pio Dan-Zw¨, the traditional authorities finalized the organization of the upcoming "crusade" of the Gourounsi chiefs, scheduled for February 14 in the City of Tubers.

According to Burkina Information Agency, this meeting is part of a "return to the roots" dynamic initiated in 2025 by the customary leaders of the Gourounsi area, namely the Nahouri, the Sanguie, the Ziro, Tcheriba, and the Sissili. After the stages in Reo (Sanguie) and P´ (Nahouri) in 2025, it is Leo's turn to host this rotating platform aimed at consolidating unity and solidarity within the Nuni communities.

Anticipating the February 14th meeting, His Majesty Lio-Pio Dan-Zw¨ mobilized his peers to ensure a resounding success for the event. Beyond the logistical preparations, the discussions resulted in concrete decisions, including a project to establish a customary solidarity fund to support community initiatives, the definition of mechanisms to promote local customs in order to preserve cultural heritage in the face of modernity, as well as proposals for resource mobilization initiatives for the benefit of customary notables.

The canton chief of Leo took advantage of this platform to review the chieftaincy's civic engagement. He reported on the recent delivery of support to the armed forces (FDS and VDP) and relayed messages of encouragement from government members during their recent courtesy visits to the province.

The High Commissioner of the Sissili province, Tewende Isaac Sia, came to commend this initiative. "I reiterate my thanks and commend the efforts you make every day for the advancement of the province," he declared to the traditional leaders. The administrative authority also took the opportunity to announce a busy agenda for the first quarter of 2026.

These include the tuber festival, scheduled for January 22-24, the Tampani Festival, which will be held on January 31, and the promotion of school heritage through the celebration of the 126th anniversary of the Kutian school, a historic establishment opened in 1900, marking the fourth school created in Upper Volta (now Burkina Faso).

This mobilization of canton chiefs demonstrates the desire of the traditional leadership to play a leading role in the social cohesion and cultural development of Sissili and all the Gourounsi regions.
