Sierra Leone Moves to Draft Comprehensive Fire Safety Act in Multi-Stakeholder Talks

Freetown: The National Fire Force convened a major multi-stakeholder engagement on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at the Sierra Leone Labour Congress Hall in Freetown. The meeting focused on high-level discussions to develop a comprehensive Fire Safety Act aimed at strengthening fire prevention, emergency response, and regulatory enforcement nationwide.

According to Sierra Leone News Agency, the event brought together representatives from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, other government institutions, the private sector including business leaders and property owners, and civil society organizations advocating for public safety.

Delivering the keynote address, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs stressed the urgent need for a coordinated national response to rising fire incidents affecting homes, markets, and public institutions. He described the proposed Act as both a legal framework and a practical tool to boost the National Fire Force's operational capacity, insisting the law must align with international best practices while reflecting Sierra Leone's local realities.

Discussions highlighted three core objectives: prevention through stronger building regulations and public awareness; response by improving coordination and emergency efficiency; and enforcement via clear legal measures, penalties, and regular safety inspections.

After the opening session, technical discussions allowed stakeholders to identify gaps in the current fire safety system and propose sustainable solutions. Topics included infrastructure resilience, fire service delivery, and effective implementation of the proposed law.

The engagement marks a significant step toward reducing fire-related risks and protecting lives and property across Sierra Leone, with the National Fire Force, Ministry of Internal Affairs, and partners leading the effort.
