Sierra Leone Assumes UN Security Council Presidency for August 2024

OUAGADOUGOU — Sierra Leone has taken the helm of the United Nations Security Council’s rotating presidency for August 2024, following its succession of Russia in this role.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the nation is set to lead the agenda setting, meetings, and activities of the Council, focusing on fostering dialogue and finding lasting resolutions to global conflicts. President Julius Maada Bio highlighted the importance of mutual trust and respect in achieving peaceful outcomes. He emphasized Sierra Leone’s dedication to addressing international peace and security challenges during its presidency term.

President Bio is scheduled to arrive in Ouagadougou tomorrow for a friendship and working visit, marking over fifty years since Sierra Leone last presided over the Security Council. The visit also aims to enhance bilateral relations between Sierra Leone and Burkina Faso, focusing on cooperative development.
