Sierra Leone and India’s NIST University Forge Higher Education Partnership

Freetown: Sierra Leone's Ministry of Technical and Higher Education (MTHE) and India's National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST) University have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to boost cooperation in higher education, research, innovation, and academic exchange. The Ministry was represented by its Director of Higher Education, Emmanuel J. Momoh Esq., and Acting Director of Research, Planning and Development, Idrissa Sannoh. According to Sierra Leone News Agency, delivering a statement on behalf of Minister Dr. Haja Ramatulai Wurie, Momoh Esq. called the agreement a major milestone in Sierra Leone-India relations. He said the partnership reflects a shared commitment to advancing higher education through research, teaching, faculty development, and exchange programs for academic and administrative staff. Discussions began last year after NIST University representatives visited Sierra Leone. The Ministry deemed it important to reciprocate and formalize the collaboration via the MoU. Momoh Esq. noted the Ministry carefully reviewed the agreement and sought legal advice from the Attorney General's office before signing. 'Signing an MoU is not the end, designing a roadmap for its implementation is crucial,' he said, expressing confidence both parties will fulfill their responsibilities. The partnership aligns with Sierra Leone's national development priorities, especially the government's Human Capital Development agenda championed by President Julius Maada Bio. Momoh Esq. reaffirmed the government's commitment to expanding access to quality tertiary education, strengthening research capacity, and promoting global academic exchange.
