OUAGADOUGOU — In a significant gathering marking the 40th anniversary of the ‘Journal de tous les Burkinabè’, Assétou Badoh, the General Director of Éditions Sidwaya, rallied her team to take pride in their publication and commit to its legacy as a beacon of national heritage. The event, imbued with a sense of historical significance, emphasized the enduring value of Sidwaya in Burkina Faso’s media landscape.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Assétou Badoh/Guira articulated a deep appreciation for the efforts of her colleagues, recognizing their dedication to sustaining a publication that has become synonymous with the nation’s collective memory and cultural identity. The Sidwaya staff commemorated this milestone by singing the national anthem, reinforcing their solidarity and shared mission to nurture the newspaper’s legacy.

Badoh’s address highlighted the foundational principles of Sidwaya, which was established on April 5, 1984, during the presidency of Thomas Sankara. She recalled the inaugural editorial penned by Comrade Minister of Information, Adama Touré, who defined Sidwaya as a pivotal instrument for continuous public enlightenment and engagement, underpinning the democratic and popular revolution of the time. Touré’s vision for Sidwaya was to articulate the Voltaic people’s voice, encapsulating their struggles, triumphs, and aspirations free from imperialist influences.

The convergence of Sidwaya and the Burkina Information Agency (AIB) in 1999 into Les Éditions Sidwaya marked a strategic consolidation in Burkina Faso’s press sector. The upcoming May celebrations will honor both 40 years of Sidwaya and 60 years of AIB, showcasing a legacy of journalistic integrity and national commitment through a series of commemorative activities.
