SIAYA - Members of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) in Siaya today staged a protest against President William Ruto's recent comments about the judiciary.
According to Kenya New Agency, who demonstrated on the streets of Siaya, the protest was a part of a countrywide action by the Law Society of Kenya. The advocates, who practice at the Siaya law courts, carried placards calling for respect among the various arms of the government. The protest was led by lawyer Leonard Okanda, who emphasized that there are established procedures to follow if the President has concerns about the performance of judiciary members.
Speaking to the media outside the Siaya law courts, Okanda stressed the importance of respecting the independence of the judiciary, noting that both the executive and the judiciary are creations of the constitution. Victor Oduol, a member of the LSK, added that lawyers will persistently remind those in power to respect the law and the constitution.
Brian Ochanyo, another lawyer participating in the protest, reiterated their commitment to defending the rule of law. He reminded the President of the necessity to obey court orders and stated that allegations of corruption within the judiciary should be handled by investigative agencies.
The protest by the Siaya lawyers reflects a broader concern within the legal community about maintaining the independence of the judiciary and the importance of adhering to constitutional procedures.
