SIAYA — In a significant move toward agricultural development, Siaya County is witnessing the progress of the Lower Nzoia Irrigation Project Phase 1, a venture that promises substantial economic and agricultural benefits. The project, heralded for its potential to slash the national rice deficit by nearly 30%, is drawing attention and support from various government sectors.
According to Kenya News Agency, the project is a beacon of agricultural innovation and sustainability in the region. By producing five million metric tonnes of rice, the initiative is poised to address a significant portion of the country’s rice shortage. The scheme covers ten thousand hectares, aiming to produce twenty-six thousand tonnes of rice for the area, thereby contributing significantly to national food security.
During a meeting with Siaya Governor James Orengo, discussions focused on the project’s scope and its integration with local agricultural strategies. Both Principal Secretaries for Irrigation and Trade underscored the importance of forming strategic partnerships and establishing a County Irrigation Development Unit to bolster the project’s success and ensure lasting benefits for local farmers.
Governor Orengo expressed enthusiasm for the project’s impact on Siaya, highlighting its potential to revolutionize the county’s agricultural landscape. The completion of the project’s first phase, expected in March, marks a milestone in Siaya’s commitment to agricultural advancement. The initiative also extends to Busia County, reflecting a broader regional collaboration.
Moreover, with the agricultural sector identified as a cornerstone of Siaya’s development strategy, the project aligns with broader efforts to enhance economic stability and growth. The upcoming second phase of the project signals continued investment and confidence in Siaya’s agricultural potential.
Principal Secretary for Trade Alfred K’ Ombudo also emphasized the critical role of infrastructure and market mechanisms in maximizing the project’s benefits. Efforts to improve produce aggregation, storage, and market access are integral to ensuring that the project translates into tangible income and prosperity for the region.
As Siaya and its partners forge ahead with this transformative project, the future holds promise for enhanced agricultural productivity, economic development, and food security in the region.
